Birhane Wins Inaugural Yenagoa 10K as Ethiopia Dominates Podium

Ethiopia’s Habtamu Birhane delivered a commanding performance to claim victory in the first-ever Yenagoa City International 10km Road Race in Bayelsa State, Nigeria.

Birhane crossed the line in an impressive 29 minutes and 23 seconds to secure the $5,000 top prize, etching his name into the event’s history as its inaugural champion.

Nigeria’s Gang James finished second in 29:59, while compatriot Francis James placed third in 30:16, earning $3,000 and $2,000 respectively.

The women’s race was dominated by Ethiopian athletes, who swept the podium positions. Shewaye Dugo Tolosa led the field with a winning time of 33:50, followed by Tigist Girma in 34:07 and Gacasho Jilo in 34:57.

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri praised the successful staging of the event, commending organisers Nilayo Sports Management and the State Sports Ministry for their efforts.

“This race has come to stay in Bayelsa, and we will continue to improve on future editions,” he said, noting its potential to raise the state’s international sporting profile.

Nilayo Sports Management Chief Executive Yetunde Olopade also expressed appreciation for the government’s support, reaffirming the organisation’s commitment to delivering world-class long-distance races.

The race concluded in a lively atmosphere, with enthusiastic spectators lining the route and cheering runners across the finish line.

With strong participation, competitive performances, and a notable prize structure, the Yenagoa City International 10km Road Race appears set to establish itself as a key fixture on the African athletics calendar.
