A bill seeking to establish the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences in Iyin, Ekiti State has passed second reading at the Senate.

The bill will make comprehensive provisions for its due management and its administration.

The sponsor of the bill Senator Opeyemi Bamidele on Tuesday said if passed, the university will deliver education and training to current and future employees of the medical profession.

According to him, the goal of the university is to inspire and motivate students and medical personnel about the value of being health professionals to lead change for a more sustainable health sector.

It is also intended to provide and promote sound basic scientific training as a foundation for the development of medicine and allied disciplines, taking into account indigenous culture, the need to enhance national unity, the need to vastly increase the practical content of student training, and adequate preparation of graduates for self-employment in medicine and allied professions.

Senator Bamidele disclosed that the Ekiti State Government is ready to part with over 1000 acres of land in support of the establishment of this institution.
