American Woman Abandons Mansion To Live In Tiny Home She Built For R500k: “I Live For Free”
- In 2019, Precious Price was the owner of a big house and she normally gave it out as an Airbnb given the nature of her work which required a lot of travelling
- In 2020, however, Covid-19 struck, and she was grounded at home with no clients for her side hustle of Airbnb renting
- She rented out her big house, then built a tiny one where she now lives and the rent from her main house pays for all her living expenses
An American woman, Precious Price, has shocked many by saying she abandoned her three-bedroom, 1,400-square-foot house to live in a tiny house she build in her backyard.
Price had a big house in Atlanta, Georgia
Price bought her sprawling beautiful house in Atlanta, Georgia four years ago for the princely sum of $196,000.
The main idea at the time was live in one part of the house while the extra rooms could be used for Airbnb clients.
In 2020 however, the bookings dried up and no one wanted to share a house with strangers because of the pandemic and being in the huge house alone didn’t make sense anymore reports CNBC Make it.
“That May, as I stared out the kitchen widow into my huge backyard, something clicked: I could use that space to build a tiny home to live in, and fully rent out the main house,” said Price.
The tiny house cost her R500k
After submitting all the necessary building requirements to the authorities, she bought a shed and construction formally started in October 2020.
“Overall, it cost me around $35,000 to build the home, which includes the prefabricated shed structure, labor and material costs,” she said.

Price didn’t take out a bank loan but instead cashed out KSh 1 million ($8,500) in stocks and put about $20,000 on her credit cards to pay for everything.
She paid off her debt last year.
Price rented out her main house and also paid a neighbour KSh 38,000 ($300) for a room as her house was being built.
The 296-square-foot tiny house was completed in March 2021. It boasts a living area that includes a bed, kitchen, full bathroom and breakfast area.
There are also eight separate windows, wall mirrors and glass doors which make the place look bigger.
Price gets R50k as rent from mansion
Price gets $2,725 from renting out the main house, and it covers all her living expenses which means she is living for free.
Price also revealed that the home gave her more options in real estate, including rental income and backup housing for herself and old family members.
