Agbedi Heads to European Parliament Freedom of Expression Summit After Paying Last Respects to Late Bayelsa Deputy Governor

Rt. Hon. Fred Agbedi, PhD, Member representing Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Special Duties, has departed for Brussels, Belgium, to participate in a high-level Freedom of Expression Summit at the European Parliament.

His trip to Europe comes immediately after he paid his final respects to the late Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, PhD, following the burial rites, underscoring his deep sense of duty to both his constituency and the nation.

The sequence of events reflects Rt. Hon. Agbedi’s commitment to balancing solemn domestic responsibilities with critical international engagements, even at moments demanding personal and political sensitivity.

The Freedom of Expression Summit convenes lawmakers, jurists, policymakers, academics, and civil society leaders from Europe, Africa, and the Americas to deliberate on the protection of free speech and the strengthening of democratic values worldwide.

The summit is jointly organized by the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), the Patriots for Europe (PfE), and the Political Network for Values (PNfV), highlighting a broad coalition committed to democratic accountability and fundamental rights.

Key sessions at the summit focus on the roles of the state, parliaments, the media, academia, and international institutions in safeguarding freedom of expression in increasingly complex political environments.

Rt. Hon. Agbedi is among a select group of global parliamentarians contributing to discussions on legislative responsibility, democratic discourse in the digital age, and the growing challenge of censorship across jurisdictions.

The event also examines contemporary global issues, including the implications of the European Union’s Digital Services Act, the defence of truth in public debate, and strategies for building strong transatlantic alliances in support of freedom.

Through his participation, Rt. Hon. Agbedi brings Nigeria’s legislative perspective into critical global conversations, reinforcing the country’s voice in shaping democratic norms and values.

His engagement in Brussels reaffirms his dedication to responsible lawmaking, inclusive governance, and the promotion of fundamental freedoms, while projecting Nigeria as an active and credible participant in the global democratic dialogue.
