Agbedi Champions Rule of Law, Ensures Fair Hearing at National Assembly Public Petitions Session
Rt. Hon. (Chief) Fred Agbedi, Ph.D., Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Special Duties, has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to justice and due process during a public hearing on a petition brought before the House.
At the session held at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, Rt. Hon. Agbedi presided over proceedings involving petitioners and police respondents in a matter requiring legislative oversight and intervention.
The hearing formed part of the Committee’s constitutional mandate to investigate grievances brought by citizens and ensure that government institutions operate within the ambit of the law.
In a calm, firm, and methodical manner, Rt. Hon. Agbedi engaged both parties, asking probing questions aimed at establishing the facts surrounding the petition.
He maintained a balanced approach throughout the proceedings, giving equal opportunity to the petitioners to present their claims and to the police authorities to respond to the allegations raised.
Agbedi emphasized that fairness, transparency, and adherence to due process remain the guiding principles of the House in handling public petitions.
According to him, legislative oversight must not only uncover the truth but must also strengthen public trust in democratic institutions.
He urged all parties to make their submissions with honesty, clarity, and respect for the integrity of the process.
The Chairman noted that the Committee’s responsibility extends beyond hearing complaints to ensuring that justice is served in a manner consistent with constitutional provisions.
He further reassured the petitioners that their concerns would be treated with the seriousness and impartiality they deserve.
At the same time, he stressed that respondents must be accorded adequate opportunity to defend themselves, in line with the principle of fair hearing.
Observers at the session commended the orderly conduct of proceedings, which reflected the House’s dedication to institutional accountability.
The Committee outlined the next procedural steps, including a comprehensive review of written submissions and documentary evidence presented.
Possible follow-up actions, including recommendations and further hearings where necessary, were also indicated as part of the investigative process.
Concluding the session, Rt. Hon. Agbedi reiterated the resolve of the House Committee on Special Duties to deliver fair, timely, and lawful resolutions that uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of all parties involved.
