A Family Affair in Paradise: How a Stop at St. Maarten Reminded Me What Really Matters

…A Journey Beyond the Office, on Board the Icon of the Seas

It’s not every day you find yourself standing on the sun-soaked shores of St. Maarten, watching turquoise waves kiss the sand, with the laughter of your loved ones echoing in the background. But that was my reality, and one I’ll never forget. In a world constantly pulling us toward deadlines, emails, and endless productivity, I chose something different: to pause, reconnect, and breathe.

Our destination was the stunning island of St. Maarten, a place where the skies meet the sea in the most dramatic of embraces, and where every corner whispers stories of colonial history, resilience, and cultural fusion. But beyond the postcard-worthy views, this trip meant something deeper—it was about returning to my roots and restoring my balance.

I boarded the Icon of the Seas cruise with my family, leaving behind the buzz of everyday life. It wasn’t just a vacation; it was a reunion of sorts—a moment to reflect on the people who’ve been by my side through every season of life, especially the quiet ones where success feels empty without someone to share it with.

St. Maarten greeted us like an old friend. The island, split between Dutch and French control, offers a unique cultural blend that mirrors many of our own family stories—diverse, layered, and beautiful in its complexity. We explored the bustling streets of Philipsburg, then wandered through the quieter, charming enclaves on the French side, each turn revealing vibrant murals, local music, and warm smiles.

But it was more than just sightseeing. It was the slow breakfasts on the ship’s deck, the spontaneous dance sessions under Caribbean sunsets, and the heartfelt conversations that made the difference. We laughed over shared memories, shed a few quiet tears over loved ones no longer with us, and celebrated how far we’ve come—together.

As someone deeply focused on career growth, I’ve often found myself pushing personal moments aside, unintentionally allowing work to crowd out the relationships that matter most. But in the gentle lull of the ocean, I realised something profound: success means little when it’s not shared.

The Icon of the Seas itself was a marvel—luxurious, massive, and buzzing with energy. Yet amid its grandeur, what stood out most was the simplicity of quality time. No boardrooms, no notifications, just the presence of those I hold dear. It’s amazing how clearly we see life when we strip away the noise.

There’s something humbling about being at sea. The vastness reminds you of how small we truly are—and how significant every hug, every laugh, and every “I love you” becomes when you make the time for it.

On our stop in St. Maarten, we learned about the island’s deep colonial history, including the Treaty of Concordia, which has kept peace between the Dutch and French since 1648. It’s a lesson in harmony, in learning to share space without conflict—something that felt particularly symbolic during a trip centred on family.

We snorkelled off the coast of Maho Beach, famously located next to the Princess Juliana International Airport, where planes fly so low you feel like you can touch them. It was exhilarating, surreal, and joyful—much like the trip itself. The kind of moment you wish you could bottle and keep forever.

Back on the ship, as we sailed toward our next stop, I sat with a cup of coffee watching the sunrise over the open sea. My heart was full. Not from luxury or escape, but from presence. The kind of presence that reminds you what life is truly about—not just chasing milestones, but creating memories.

Too often, we think of “taking a break” as a distraction from our goals. But I’ve learned that the best breaks recharge your purpose. They help you return to the world with greater clarity, grounded by the love that makes your journey worthwhile in the first place.

This trip was more than a getaway. It was a gentle reset, a realignment with what truly matters: family, time, and the stories we write together. And in the backdrop of St. Maarten’s breathtaking beauty, I was reminded that paradise isn’t just a place—it’s a feeling found in shared moments with those who matter most.

As we returned home, I brought more than souvenirs—I brought perspective. And that, I believe, is the true gift of travel.
