House of Representatives aspirants and critical stakeholders from Nsukka Zone have issued a strong warning to the Nigeria Democratic Congress against the imposition of a senatorial candidate for Enugu North Senatorial District.
They insisted that internal democracy, transparency and fairness must guide the emergence of candidates for the three House of Representatives seats in the zone.
The warning was contained in a communiqué issued after a crucial strategic meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday, where the stakeholders stressed that the people of Nsukka would resist any form of political imposition.
The group argued that Nsukka Zone, which accounts for an estimated 56 per cent of Enugu state’s voting population, remains too politically strategic for the party leadership to ignore the feelings of the people.
“Any unpopular imposition in Nsukka Zone could have grave electoral consequences for the party,” the communiqué stated.
The stakeholders further warned that many aspirants contesting various elective positions under the NDC platform could be forced to withdraw their support and participation in the party if the senatorial candidate is eventually imposed against the wishes of party faithful and grassroots members.
The aspirants also dismissed the influence of money politics in the zone, insisting that electoral victories in Nsukka are determined by grassroots acceptance, credibility, integrity and competence rather than political spending or elite endorsement.
Drawing references to the 2023 general elections, the stakeholders recalled how the Labour Party recorded its strongest outing in Nsukka Zone, contributing significantly to the defeat of a sitting governor during the senatorial election, a demonstration, they said, of the political independence of Nsukka voters and their long-standing resistance to imposed candidates.
Despite their grievances, the aspirants reaffirmed their loyalty to the NDC and passed a strong vote of confidence on former Enugu State Governor, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, applauding his leadership and commitment to building a formidable and people-oriented party structure in Enugu State.
They assured the party leadership of their continued support, provided democratic principles are respected and the wishes of the people allowed to prevail.
The tension within the NDC in Enugu North reflects a broader and deeply entrenched challenge in Nigerian politics, the phenomenon of imposition, where powerful political figures or party hierarchies override the preferences of grassroots members to install preferred candidates.
The practice has been one of the most persistent sources of internal conflict within political parties across the country, frequently triggering defections, parallel structures, court battles and in extreme cases, the outright collapse of party organisations ahead of general elections.
