Police killing in Delta State sparks outrage as youth group demands justice

The Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Forum (NDENYLF) has strongly condemned the alleged extrajudicial killing of a 28-year-old man, Oghenemine M. Ogidi, in Delta State, calling for an immediate and transparent investigation.

In a statement issued on 29 April 2026, the group said Mr. Ogidi, an indigene of Ujevwu Community in Udu Local Government Area, was killed on 26 April in Effurun under what it described as “disturbing and questionable circumstances.”

NDENYLF said the incident represents “a gross violation of fundamental human rights” and warned that repeated allegations of this nature risk further eroding public trust in security agencies tasked with protecting lives.

The group expressed solidarity with the victim’s family and the Ujevwu community, describing the death as “senseless” and calling for accountability.

It urged the Inspector General of Police to order a “comprehensive, transparent and independent investigation” into the case. It also called on oversight bodies, including the Police Service Commission and the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs, to ensure justice is delivered.

“This matter must not be swept under the carpet,” the statement said, adding that youths across the Niger Delta are closely monitoring developments.

NDENYLF warned that failure to ensure accountability could trigger lawful mass protests across the region against police brutality and impunity.

While urging young people to remain calm and law-abiding, the group stressed that delays in justice could heighten tensions and weaken confidence in public institutions.

The statement was signed by Engr. Legborsi Yamaabana, spokesman of the forum and President-General of the Ogoni Youth Federation.
