Outrage in Delta as Party Condemns ‘Extrajudicial Killing’ by Police

Effurun, Delta State – 29 April 2026
The Delta State chapter of the African Action Congress (AAC) has condemned the reported killing of an unarmed suspect by personnel of the Nigeria Police Force in Effurun.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Prince Maxwell Ogor, the party described the incident as an abuse of power and a violation of fundamental human rights.
The AAC questioned the circumstances surrounding the killing, asking why law enforcement officers appeared to have taken on the roles of “judge and executioner,” rather than following due legal process.
“No law enforcement agency has the constitutional authority to carry out extrajudicial killings,” the statement said, adding that the police are mandated to arrest and investigate suspects before handing them over to the courts.
The party called for an immediate and transparent investigation into the incident, as well as the identification and prosecution of any officers involved. It also urged authorities to introduce reforms aimed at tackling police brutality in Delta State and across Nigeria.
The police have not publicly responded to the specific allegations.
Incidents involving alleged excessive use of force by security personnel have been reported in Nigeria in recent years, contributing to public concern over accountability. The issue gained international attention during the End SARS protests, which were sparked by accusations of abuses by a now-disbanded police unit.
Rights groups have since continued to document cases of unlawful killings and misconduct, calling for deeper institutional reforms within the police.
The AAC said it remains opposed to what it described as a pattern of impunity, insisting that security agencies must prioritise the protection of citizens’ lives.
