2027: Agbedi Eyes Bayelsa West Senate Seat, Expresses Confidence PDP Will Overcome Internal Crisis

A member of the House of Representatives of Nigeria, Fred Agbedi, has signalled his intention to contest the senatorial seat of Bayelsa West Senatorial District in the forthcoming 2027 Nigerian general election. The lawmaker currently represents Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency in Bayelsa State.

Speaking with journalists, Agbedi said his decision to seek a seat in the Senate was driven by what he described as the need to strengthen representation for the people of Bayelsa West and attract more federal development projects to the district.

The federal lawmaker also addressed the internal challenges currently facing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), acknowledging that the party has experienced a period of political tension and internal disagreements in recent months.

The PDP, one of Nigeria’s major political parties, has faced leadership disputes, court cases and factional divisions that have created uncertainty among members and supporters across the country.

Despite these challenges, Agbedi expressed optimism that the party would overcome its internal struggles before the next general election.

According to him, the PDP has historically demonstrated resilience and has repeatedly resolved internal disputes through dialogue and democratic processes.

He said party leaders and stakeholders are already working behind the scenes to reconcile aggrieved members and rebuild unity within the organisation.

Agbedi stressed that unity within the PDP remains essential if the party hopes to maintain its strong presence in Bayelsa State and other parts of Nigeria.

Reacting to a recent court judgement involving the party, the lawmaker said the ruling should be respected by all members while legal and political processes continue to clarify the situation.

He noted that disagreements and legal battles are not unusual in large political parties, especially ahead of major elections.

Agbedi urged PDP supporters to remain calm and avoid actions that could further deepen divisions within the party.

He added that the priority for party leaders should be to strengthen internal democracy and ensure that members remain committed to the party’s broader political goals.

The lawmaker also emphasised the importance of focusing on governance and delivering the dividends of democracy to citizens despite ongoing political disagreements.

He said the people of Bayelsa West expect effective representation and continued advocacy on key regional issues such as environmental protection, infrastructure development and economic empowerment.

Agbedi highlighted several initiatives he has facilitated in his constituency, including youth empowerment programmes, educational support schemes, community development projects and healthcare interventions across communities in Sagbama and Ekeremor, which he said demonstrate his commitment to improving the living conditions of his constituents.
