Bayelsa First Lady Praised for Granting Scholarship to Assault Victim

The President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Bayelsa State Chapter, Dr Frank Odunukwe, has commended the First Lady of Bayelsa State, Dr Gloria Diri, for her compassionate intervention in the case of Miss Nancy Wilfred, a young assault victim who has now been awarded a full university scholarship.
Dr Odunukwe, who visited Miss Wilfred at the Government House Clinic in Yenagoa, described the First Lady’s swift action as an act of “motherly compassion that transcends ethnic boundaries.” He said her support had “touched the bone marrow” of the Igbo community in Bayelsa State.
“The humane heart of Her Excellency is a testament to her role as a true mother of the state,” Dr Odunukwe noted, adding that the decision to provide not only medical and security assistance but also educational support had left a lasting impression on the community.
The Ohaneze Ndigbo Bayelsa Chapter also pledged its continued partnership with the administration of Governor Douye Diri to promote peace, inclusivity, and development across the state.
Dr Odunukwe extended appreciation to the Gender Response Initiative Team, led by Barr Diseiye, and to the Bayelsa State Police Command under Commissioner Francis Idu, for their efforts in addressing the case and ensuring justice is served.
“We are confident that justice will prevail, and those responsible for this heinous act will be brought to book,” he added.
The First Lady’s gesture has been hailed as a powerful symbol of solidarity, empathy, and hope—strengthening ties between the government and the Igbo community in Bayelsa State.
