George Turnah Hails Dr. Samuel Ogbuku’s Sun Public Service Award as a Well-Deserved Honour for Transformational Leadership

The Zonal Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), South South Zone, Barr. Alabh George Turnah, MON, has lauded the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, for receiving The Sun Public Service Award 2024. The prestigious award ceremony took place on Saturday in Lagos, recognizing Dr. Ogbuku’s exceptional contributions to public service and the development of the Niger Delta region.
Barr. Turnah, who was among the close associates accompanying Dr. Ogbuku to the event, expressed his admiration through a statement released by his media assistant, Kelvin Loveday-Egbo. He emphasized that the award is a testament to Dr. Ogbuku’s unwavering dedication and visionary leadership in transforming the Niger Delta.
In his heartfelt congratulatory message, Turnah noted that “Dr. Ogbuku’s tenure at the NDDC has been marked by significant strides in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and community empowerment. His commitment to addressing the longstanding challenges of our region has ushered in a new era of hope and progress.
“Under Dr. Ogbuku’s leadership, the NDDC has undertaken numerous infrastructure projects, including the construction and rehabilitation of over 5,141.3 kilometers of roads, 42 bridges, and 87 jetties across the Niger Delta. Notable projects such as the Ogbia-Nembe Road in Bayelsa State and the Ibeno Bridge in Akwa Ibom State stand as testaments to his dedication to improving connectivity and fostering economic growth in the region.
“In the healthcare sector, Dr. Ogbuku has prioritized the well-being of residents of the Niger Delta. The NDDC has constructed 142 health centers equipped with modern facilities and reinstated a free healthcare program that has benefited thousands, providing over 20,000 surgeries and attending to 45,000 patients. These initiatives have significantly enhanced healthcare accessibility for rural communities.
“Education and youth empowerment have also been focal points of Dr. Ogbuku’s administration. The NDDC’s Foreign Post-Graduate Scholarship Programme has benefited 2,323 students, while numerous schools have been rehabilitated, and educational materials distributed to foster learning. These efforts aim to nurture a generation equipped with the skills and knowledge to drive the region’s future.”
Barr. Turnah highlighted Dr. Ogbuku’s proactive approach to conflict resolution and community engagement. “The NDDC’s Department of Dispute and Conflict Resolution works tirelessly to maintain peaceful relations with communities, ensuring that development projects proceed smoothly. Regular training sessions for staff on peace-building and conflict management have proven effective in resolving issues that previously stalled progress.
He further noted that “under the leadership of Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the NDDC has launched the “Light Up the Niger Delta” project, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at improving electricity supply across the region. This project focuses on providing solar-powered streetlights, enhancing rural electrification, and rehabilitating critical power infrastructure to boost economic activities and security in Niger Delta communities. By addressing the region’s longstanding power challenges, the initiative is fostering development, supporting local businesses, and improving the overall quality of life for residents.
