CWCL: ‘Bring The Trophy Home,’ Okpebholo Rallies Support For Edo Queens

He commended the team for their achievements so far, charging them to beat the South Africans to enable them to lead Group B into the semifinals.

Edo Queens defeated Inter FC 2-1 in their semi-final match to secure a place in the finals of the CAF Champions League WAFU Group B Qualifier.

 

The Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, on Friday urged the Edo Queens FC of Benin, representing Nigeria in the ongoing 2024 CAF Women Champions League in Casablanca, Morocco to beat their South Africa counterpart, Mamelodi Sundown and return home with the cup.

Okpebholo’s directive was contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua in Benin City.

He commended the team for their achievements so far, charging them to beat the South Africans to enable them to lead Group B into the semifinals.

“Go ahead to also win the cup and bring it to your fatherland. Sports will surely be given the top priority it deserves in my Government,” he said.

“I think the girls might be worried about the change of leadership in the Edo State, but I want them to know that we are with them. I have been briefed, and I know our team is in Morocco doing well. So, we will not abandon them. We are aware of the exploits, and I urge them to continue to dominate.

“My message to Edo Queens is that they have nothing to worry about. We are solidly behind them. We want our girls to be at Sundown Saturday and win for me.”

The governor assured the team of his continuous support, as they represent the state and Nigeria in Morocco.

According to him, the new administration is in solidarity with the girls who are representing the state and nation at the Confederation of Africa Football Women’s Champions League in faraway Morocco.

Edo Queens will engage in a fierce battle with the defending champions Mamelodi Sundown Girls in the last group game of the CAF Women Champions League on Saturday, November 16 2024 in Casablanca, Morocco.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 6 pm on Saturday.

The Nigeria Women Premier League champions, Edo Queens began with a 3-0 victory over Commercial Bank of Ethiopia with Emem Essien, Folashade Ijamilusi and Goodness Osigwe scoring for the Queens.
