Has Nigeria secured their AFCON 2025 spot after CAF’s decision?

CAF has awarded Nigeria three points and three goals from the abandoned Matchday 4 match in the 2025 AFCON qualification series that was supposed to be played between Libya and Nigeria

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Board recently awarded Nigeria a 3-0 forfeit win over Libya.

This decision places the Super Eagles of Nigeria on the brink of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, which is slated to hold in Morocco.

CAF’s decision followed the events of October 15, when the Nigerian team faced unexpected delays and detainment at Libya’s Al Abraq Airport before their scheduled match, a situation that CAF ruled as a violation by the Libyan Football Federation.

With the awarded three points, Nigeria now sits at the top of their group with 10 points from four matches. This places them four points ahead of the Benin Republic in second place, while Rwanda holds third position with five points. Libya, with only one point, has officially been eliminated from the qualification race.

The CAF ruling has put Nigeria in a strong position to secure their place in Morocco, as they only need a point from their remaining two matches to confirm their qualification.

What’s Next for the Super Eagles?

The 2013 AFCON champion’s next qualifier is scheduled for November 14, when they face the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in Abidjan.

A win or a draw in this encounter would guarantee the Super Eagles a ticket to the AFCON finals, which allows them to seal qualification with a game to spare.

Even if they fall short against Benin, Nigeria would still have another opportunity to qualify in their final match.

Nigeria’s Path to AFCON: Automatic Qualification Still Pending

While the CAF decision has significantly boosted Nigeria’s chances, it has not yet mathematically ensured their place in the tournament.

With two games left to play, Nigeria must secure at least a point to confirm their spot. However, with their commanding position at the top of the group, Nigeria is expected to secure the required points soon and clinch an early qualification.
