Liverpool evening headlines as Jurgen Klopp confirms centre-back transfer search
The latest Liverpool news and headlines, including Jurgen Klopp on the Reds’ search for a centre-back, Serge Aurier storming out after a row with Jose Mourinho and Thiago Alacantara’s important step.
Here are your Liverpool evening headlines for Friday, January 29.
Klopp on Liverpool searching for centre-back
After Joel Matip suffered ankle ligament damage against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday night, Jurgen Klopp admitted that Liverpool will search for a centre-back in the final days of the January transfer window.
Liverpool had previously said that they would not invest in another centre-back, despite long-term injuries to Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk. However, following Matip’s latest injury, Klopp said the club will try to bring in a defender.
“I don’t know, but we will try,” when asked if Liverpool will bolster the centre-back position. “It would be funny if people thought Liverpool are just fine with the situation and don’t care or don’t try.
“We try, but there’s nothing to say until something happens. We will see.
“The situation yesterday didn’t make it easier but we still try do the right things. If that’s possible then we will do it, if not then not.”
On the type of player Liverpool will target amid links with US international Aaron Long, Klopp added: “Of course we need to find the right player and to suit our financial situation. that’s clear as well.
“I’m not sure there’s an £80million centre-back available at the moment, where the clubs say ‘we can get £80m for him and we will sell him now’. I know that players of that calibre, I’m not sure teams would sell them now.
“Everything is long-term apart from bringing in players for the next six months – that would be short term. Usually, everything is long term.
“We had one half-season contract for Steven Caulker. It’s about a solution and that’s what we are working on.”
Serge Aurier storms out
Spurs right-back Serge Aurier reportedly stormed out of the club’s half-time team talk after he was substituted by Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho introduced Erik Lamela and Harry Winks for Aurier and the injured Harry Kane at half-time, and Aurier is said to have responded angrily to the decision.
The Daily Mail reported: “Tottenham players were involved in a fiery half-time inquest during the loss to Liverpool on Thursday night in scenes that resulted in Serge Aurier storming out of the stadium at half-time.
“There was fury at the poor defensive errors that led to Roberto Firmino’s opener just before the break which sparked angry exchanges between players.
“Jose Mourinho took the decision to substitute Aurier at half-time, a decision which infuriated the defender, who promptly left the stadium.”

Thiago Alacantara’s important step
Klopp says that Thiago Alacantara made an important step in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Spurs on Thursday night as the midfielder played in a different role.
Usually having started at the base of the midfield, Thiago was pushed into a more offensive role. And Klopp says that the new-look midfield was much-improved from recent outings.
“We played a slightly different position and it worked really well with Gini and Milly as a No.6,” he told reporters afterwards.
“That was a proper, proper performance. I know Thiago can do much better than tonight but it was just an important step for all of us.
“The situation with Thiago was not easy. He came to Liverpool late then got ill, then was injured and was then playing immediately in a decisive position.
“So we thought that tonight, it might make sense to play it slightly higher on the pitch.”
