Victor Osimhen: Has PSG abandoned their pursuit of Napoli and Nigeria bomber?

The 2024 summer transfer window promises to be as thrilling and as chaotic as ever, as Europe’s biggest clubs scramble to reinforce their squads, secure top talents, and sometimes, grapple with the departure of their star players.

This summer, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) find themselves in a whirlwind of activity, having to replace their talisman, Kylian Mbappé, who recently completed a high-profile move to Real Madrid.

Mbappé’s exit from PSG marked the end of an era. Since joining the club in 2017, Mbappé has made 308 appearances, scoring 256 goals and leading PSG to an impressive haul of 16 trophies.

His departure leaves not just a statistical gap but an emotional and tactical void that PSG desperately need to fill.

As PSG explore options to fill this massive void, the name Victor Osimhen has been a focal point of speculation.

Osimhen has been at the centre of many transfer rumours, with Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal all long-time admirers of Napoli’s dynamic Nigerian import.

Known for his blistering pace, physical presence, and clinical finishing, Osimhen can provide that which makes Mbappé almost irreplaceable – goals.

However, recent reports suggest that PSG have abandoned their pursuit of Osimhen, turning their attention to other potential signings.

Why Not Osimhen?

The reasons behind PSG’s shift in strategy are reportedly multifaceted.

Firstly, Napoli are reluctant to part ways with their star forward without a significant financial incentive.

Osimhen, who has been the star performer for Napoli, remains highly valued by the club.

However, PSG do not appear willing to meet Napoli’s demands of €130 million for Osimhen. The French champions are also eyeing Napoli playmaker Khvicha Khvarastkelia in a double deal with Osimhen.

Napoli are, however, not interested in letting the Georgian attacker leave Naples just yet.

Alternatives on the Horizon

AS reports per Tutto Napoli indicate that a move for Osimhen is off PSG’s table and that the Ligue 1 champions are chasing other top talents.

Julian Alvarez of Manchester City has emerged as a prime target for the Parisians. The young Argentine forward has expressed a desire for more playing time, and while City is hesitant to let him go, a substantial offer might sway their decision.

The report also suggests that PSG would need to shell out over €80 million to secure Alvarez’s services.

Another name in the mix is Joao Neves, a promising midfielder from Benfica.

The 2004-born talent has caught the eye of PSG’s scouts, and his potential signing would bolster their midfield options. However, Neves comes with a hefty price tag of €75 million.

Osimhen’s Current Status

While PSG explore other avenues, Victor Osimhen remains a subject of intrigue.

In Napoli’s pre-season camp in Dimaro, Osimhen has been training separately from the main group, working on personalized fitness routines. This has fueled further speculation about his future.

Despite his physical absence from team drills, Osimhen continues to be a fan favourite, with Napoli supporters often chanting his name and urging him to stay in Naples.

What’s Next for Osimhen and PSG?

With PSG seemingly turning their attention elsewhere, Osimhen’s immediate future appears to remain with Napoli.

However, the transfer window is far from over, and the football world knows that situations can change rapidly.

For now, Napoli fans can rejoice in the fact that their star striker is still with them, ready to lead the line as they aim for success under Antonio Conte.

As for PSG, the hunt for a Mbappé replacement continues.

Whether Julian Alvarez or another star steps into the fray, the Parisians are under pressure to make a marquee signing that can restore their attacking advantage and help them compete on all fronts.
