The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr Edison Ehie, has alleged that some persons, including officials of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), raided his residence on Sunday night in an attempt to take his life.

The number three citizen of the oil-rich state made this allegation in a statement issued by a legislative correspondent of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr Ken Uchendu.

It was claimed that the attackers stormed the house of the lawmaker at about 11 pm on Sunday, November 19, 2023.

However, this alleged attack was repelled by security officials stationed at the home of the head of the legislative arm of government in the state.

Recall that last month, Mr Ehie was removed as the Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly by his colleagues over allegations that he supervised the burning of the chamber by some arsonists loyal to Governor Sim Fubara.

He was later appointed as the Speaker of a faction of the House. His group impeached the Speaker of the state parliament, Mr Martin Amaewhule.

The crisis in Rivers State started after an alleged friction between Mr Fubara and the immediate past Governor of the state, Mr Nyesom Wike, who is currently the Minister of FCT.

A bit of calm was restored after the intervention of President Bola Tinubu.

It was claimed that Mr Wike was not giving his successor any breathing space, frustrating his efforts to take total control of the state.

In the statement released by Mr Uchendu, it was alleged that the gunmen who attacked the Speaker’s house last night wanted to wipe out his family until this was repelled.

Mr Ehie is said to be preparing to address a world press conference on Monday (today) over the incident, warning that the people of Rivers State will not accept any attempt to plunge the state into crisis.
