Dominik Szoboszlai in, $43m move – Liverpool dream summer transfer window for Jürgen Klopp
Liverpool has its second signing of the summer completed, and now all eyes will be on who will follow Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister to Anfield.
Jürgen Klopp nearly has the second piece of his puzzle in place, with Dominik Szoboszlai set to become Liverpool’s latest summer signing.
The Reds have certainly wasted no time in getting the deal over the line. Just last week, Szoboszlai had been nothing more than a passing mention in regard to Liverpool’s summer rebuild in midfield. That all changed in a matter of days.
Following reports of talks with RB Leipzig, the Reds look to have pounced quickly in order to trigger the 22-year-old’s $76m (£60m/€70m) release clause, which was set to expire on Friday (as per Fabrizio Romano). In the process, they blew Newcastle out of the running, and ensured they got their hands on one of the Bundesliga’s top prospects who has been compared to Erling Haaland in terms of his talent.
Szoboszlai was soon on the plane to Merseyside in order to undergo his medical (as per the ECHO), and with no other hurdles to overcome, Liverpool appears to have its man, and an announcement is expected in the next 24 hours (as per The Athletic).
The Hungary international looks set to join Alexis Mac Allister in making his way through the doors at Anfield, and gives an area of the squad that proved to be a major concern and contributed to what was a hugely disappointing season a fresh outlook.
Having said that, the work is far from over this summer.
It has been clear for some time that multiple signings are needed, and the midfield rebuild might not be over yet. There are still plenty of names to consider in that area, with the likes of Khéphren Thuram, Manu Koné and Ryan Gravenberch all being linked.
With Szoboszlai and Mac Allister seemingly already in the building, a third midfield signing would surely have to arrive as competition — or potentially even a direct replacement — for Fabinho in the number six role.
All three players could potentially fill that role, although Thuram could potentially offer the most exciting prospect. Journalist Rudy Galetti claimed this week that talks with Nice were ‘progressing’ as Liverpool looks to reach an agreement over a deal around the $44m (£34m/€40m) mark.
But while another signing could be made in midfield, there is arguably a more pressing issue for Klopp to deal with now.
While much of the focus was on the middle of the park last season, Liverpool also presented problems in the backline, and it seems likely that a new defender could be the next priority in the transfer market.
The names haven’t been quite as forthcoming as in the midfield, but there has still been a healthy amount of players linked.
Benjamin Pavard is among those to have been linked, with CalcioMercatoWeb this week claiming Liverpool is the only side to have a bid ready to submit to Bayern Munich, with Barcelona, Inter Milan and Real Madrid also said to be in the race.
The Reds though arguably need something that they haven’t had for some time — a left-footed center-back. And to that end, Micky van de Ven could be the ideal addition.
