Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olisa Agbakoba, has congratulated President Bola Tinubu for taking steps to dismantle corruption in Nigeria. The former governor of Lagos State has sacked the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa, and ended the fuel subsidy regime.
The move has been welcomed by anti-corruption campaigners, who say it is a sign that President Tinubu is serious about tackling corruption. “This is a massive blow to endemic corruption in Nigeria,” Agbakoba said in a tweet on Thursday. “President Tinubu has shown that he is willing to take on the powerful interests that have benefited from corruption for so long.”
President Tinubu has also been urged to reform the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The 2023 elections were marred by logistical problems, with many voters unable to cast their ballots. “The 2023 elections were the worst in our history,” Agbakoba said. “Both petitioners and respondents suffered at the hands of an incompetent INEC. Massive reforms of the electoral framework are urgently needed.”
Agbakoba said that the INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, should resign or be removed. “The reform task will be impeded if Yakubu remains in office,” he said. “He has lost the confidence of the Nigerian people.”
The reforms to INEC should include measures to improve the efficiency of the electoral process, such as the use of electronic voting. “Confidence in Nigeria’s democracy will be enhanced by a deep cleansing of INEC,” Agbakoba said
