The Delta state-sponsored female football club, Delta Queens have emerged winners of the 2023 Nigerian Women Football League (NWFL).

To emerge champions, the formidable side defeated hard-fighting Bayelsa Queens 2-1 in yesterday’s finals decided at the magnificent Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.

With the slim win, the Delta State girls have qualified to represent Nigeria in the forthcoming West African Football Union (WAFU) B Women’s CAF Champions League qualifiers.

Following intense pressure on their defence, defending champions Bayelsa Queens were gifted a big boost in the 14th minute when Delta Queens’ Henry Chisom scored an own goal to the disappointment of the home fans,

Although they started the first half on a shaky note, the home girls maintained their composure and continued to pile pressure on their opponents.

They eventually found the much-needed equaliser in the 67th minute through star girl, Chinaza Agoh, who scored with an acrobatic kick to level up things for her side.

With four minutes to regulation time, Agoh then bagged her brace for Delta Queens to be crowned the new champion of the NWFL.

Apart from the trophy, Delta Queens took home a whopping N10m prize money while Delta Queens got N5m consolation prize.

It will also be recalled that Rivers Angels were the first to represent Nigeria at the maiden edition of the CAF Champions League, while Bayelsa Queens represented the country in 2022.
