Bichi’s transformational leadership at DSS deserves commendation, say CSOs
Some civil society organisations (CSOs) have called on the general public to support the leadership of the Department of State Services (DSS), saying the Director General of the foremost domestic intelligence agency, Alhaji YM Bichi, has brought transformational leadership to bear in the organisation.
Operating under the auspices of the Citizens United Against Subversion (CUAS), and Coalition for Peace in Nigeria (COPIN), the organisation’s argued that the DG SS’ giant strides can be seen in the areas of infrastructure revolution, sustained collaboration with sister security agencies, continuous training of staff among other innovations.
In separate statements signed, Friday, by Dr Abu Mallam, and Mrs Chinonyelum Ogundele (National Coordinator and Secretary of CUAS), Pharm. Emeka Akwuobi, as well as Hajiya Fatih Yakub, (National Coordinator and Secretary of COPIN), the patriotic groups commended the Spy master for stirring the ship of the secret service on the path of professionalism, rule of law and due process.
According to the groups, the DSS under Bichi has continued to focus on its core mandate of detecting and preventing threats to national security and public safety, with resultant positive effect in the destruction of sleeper/active cells established by terrorist elements, and their arrests.
“Our investigation revealed that, in his determination to lift the Service higher, Bichi has pursued rapid human and material development. His unmatched leadership style is centred on staff development
“We can attest to the fact that since his appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari, the Fellow of War College (fwc) has pursued the acquisition of new structures and extensive renovation of dilapidated ones, in a bid to address staff accommodation challenges across state command’s.
“It was further discovered that Bichi overseen the creation of new departments, and expansion of portfolios to accommodate officers”, CUAS said in the statement.
On its part, COPIN noted the “continuous replacement of operational vehicles for directors, and their deputies, even as he has introduced biometric documentation system”.
This was as the peace advocacy group further noted that, in the course of assessing the DSS in the last four years, it discovered that Bichi has successfully established the Special Intervention Squad (SIS), as well as Tactical Teams, to respond to emergency security situations across the country”.
“From independent interviews, conducted by our field officials we found out that the Service has always furnished relevant security and law enforcement agencies with actionable/timely intelligence on possible attacks by enemies of state”, COPIN stated.
