HYDROGRAPHIC VESSEL FOR NIGERIAN NAVY
A hydrographic and oceanographic research vessel has been, designed, built and launched for the Nigerian Navy.
France-based OCEA was contracted to deliver the research vessel and associated logistical support services.
The launching ceremony of this OCEA OSV 190 SC-WB hydrographic research vessel, now called Lana, took place on 24 September at the OCEA site in Les Sables d’Olonne.
Lana capabilities
The Lana will be used for coastal and deep-sea scientific research and studies (hydrography, oceanography); fishing control; surveillance of Nigeria’s Exclusive Economic Zone; assistance and supplies to other boats; helicopter winching operation; and towing of ships.
The ship is equipped with a deep water multibeam echosounder; a single beam depth-water sounder; a side scan sonar; a current meter; means of sampling, storage and analysis of water, fish and sediment; laboratory hardware and software; and an 8m hydrographic boat equipped for data surveys along the coasts in small and very shallow waters.
The contract strengthens the presence of the OCEA Group in Nigeria, whose Navy already operates numerous patrol vessels from 24-35m built by OCEA.
By the end of 2020, the Vendée shipyard will deliver two 35-meter FPB 110 MKII type patrol boats and four interceptors to the Nigerian Navy.
