Manchester City’s march to another Premier League crown continued on Wednesday as they beat Brentford 2-0 at the Etihad.
Liverpool kept pace with Manchester City and Arsenal edged closer to a top-four spot with wins in the Premier League on Thursday night.
Jurgen Klopp’s Anfield side now sit nine points off Pep Guardiola’s reigning English champions, following a 2-0 victory over Leicester City.
A first half goal from Diogo Jota was then doubled by the player a few minutes from time to confirm all three points, as Liverpool strive to keep up with Man City‘s remarkable form. Leicester, as a result, stayed put in twelfth place.
Arsenal were also in a jubilant mood on the night, following a hard-fought 1-0 win over Wolves. An opening goal from Gabriel suggested Mikel Arteta’s side were in for a comfortable night, but a second yellow card for Gabriel Martinelli in the 69th minute meant the North London side were forced to cling on to their slender lead until full time.
The result now means that Arteta’s side sit just one point off West Ham in fourth, with two games in hand.
Prior to Thursday’s games, Manchester City continued their march to another Premier League crown on Wednesday as they beat Brentford 2-0 at the Etihad.
Riyad Mahrez opened the scoring five minutes before half time from the penalty spot before Kevin de Bruyne doubled the advantage on 69 minutes.
On Tuesday, Manchester United dropped out of the Premier League top four on when they were held 1-1 by Burnley.
In a hard-fought clash at Turf Moor, Ralf Rangnick’s side took an early lead through an impressive close-range finish from Paul Pogba, after an early header from Raphael Varane was ruled out by VAR.
Man Utd‘s lack of accuracy in front of goal would ultiamtely cost them, when the hosts drew level just a few minutes into the second half thanks to some smart movement from new signing Wout Weghorst and a tidy finish from Jay Rodriguez.
The team that were able to take advantage of Man Utd‘s slip up were West Ham, who picked up all three points thanks to a convincing 1-0 win over Watford in London.
The only goal of the game came shortly after the hour mark, when Jarrod Brown danced by a few Watford defenders and unleashed a remarkable shot from the edge of the box, which deflected into the back of the net.
David Moyes’ side now sit fourth in the table, one point about Man Utd and Arsenal, but seven behind Chelsea in third.
Tottenham blew the chance to join Man Utd on 39 points as they fell to a thrilling 3-2 home defeat to Southampton on Wednesday.
They twice led through a Jan Bednarek own goal and Heung-Min Son strike but Southampton created lots of chances throughout and strikes from Armando Broja, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams earned them a deserved win.
At the bottom end, Norwich drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace, while Leeds had their own dramatic thriller in a 3-3 draw with Aston Villa.
Newcastle came from behind to beat Frank Lampard’s Everton side 3-1. An own goal from Jamaal Lascelles put the visitors in front after just 36 minutes, but it didn’t last long when Mason Holgate returned the favour and knocked the ball into his own net to gift Newcastle a goal.
In the second half the hosts then pulled away with the lead thanks to a short-range finish from Ryan Fraser and a remarkable long-range finish from new signing Kieran Trippier.
Newcastle remain one point above the relegation zone, with Burnley, Watford and Norwich occupying the bottom three.
