The Uruguayan attacker joined an illustrious company with his equalizer for the Red Devils in Wednesday’s European cup final.

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has joined an elite company after scoring in Wednesday night’s UEFA Europa League final clash with Villarreal. The 34-year-old attacker scored the all-important equalizer for the his side after they had gone behind in the first half.

The highly-anticipated clash lived right up to expectations with both clubs turning up in search for a win. After 28 minutes, the status of the game was altered with Villarreal scoring the opener through Gerard Moreno. The Yellow Submarines then held their guns to go into the half-time break with their advantage intact but would soon have the lead requlished following a moment of poor defending.

In the 55th minute, Cavani pulled level pegging after latching onto a loose ball in the Villarreal penalty area after the Spaniard had made a mess of a clearance after a United corner. Following a brief VAR consultation, the goal was awarded to the Premier League club with Cavani having been deemed to be onside in the build-up.

With the goal, Cavani became the third player aged 34 or above to score in a major European final for an English club. Only Gary McAllister (36) for Liverpool in the UEFA Cup final in 2000-01 and Didier Drogba (34) for Chelsea in the Champions League final in 2011-12, have only managed the feat in the competition’s history.
