Manchester United could have the last laugh if Harry Kane joins Man City this summer
Manchester United should not get too upset if Harry Kane signs for rivals Manchester City this summer.
Manchester United could end up having the last laugh if Manchester City win the race to sign Harry Kane this summer. United, City and Chelsea have all reportedly made contact with Kane’s representatives after the striker told Tottenham he wants to leave at the end of this season. A move to Chelsea looks the most far-fetched option out of the three due to the rivalry between the Blues and Spurs.
That leaves United and City as the two most-realistic options for Kane in the Premier League.
There may be interested clubs abroad, of course, though it is thought the 27-year-old would prefer to stay in England.
City are in the market for a striker to replace club-record goalscorer Sergio Aguero, who is set to leave at the end of his contract.
Spurs legend Clive Allen believes City would be the best fit for Kane.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Allen said: “I have to say, Manchester City seems to be the best fit. Chelsea is unlikely.
“I can understand Man United’s interest but the perfect fit for Harry would be Manchester City.”
If that is the case, and Kane does indeed join City, it may not be the worst outcome for United.
That is because in 12 months time they will face less competition in the race to sign Erling Haaland.
Manchester United transfer news: Erling Haaland’s release clause becomes active in 2022
Haaland’s release clause of around £64.7million at Borussia Dortmund will become active in the summer of 2022.
The Norwegian will turn 22 that summer and United will surely be in the running if they miss out on Kane in the upcoming window.
City will not move for Haaland next year if they already have Kane on their books.
United could therefore take advantage and go all out for Haaland.
Haaland would be a longer-term option for United, being seven years younger than Kane.
He also does not have a track record of injuries like the England captain does.
Getting Kane out of Spurs this summer will not be easy for City, though Allen expects an exit to happen.
Allen conceded: “You’re asking me to answer with my head or my heart, and my heart says I want him to stay, but my head, my football experience and my gut feeling is that Harry will move on, I’m afraid.”
However, United should not get too aggrieved if their rivals do seal a deal for Kane, because a better deal may be awaiting them next summer.
