ALLARDYCE PUTS DOWNER ON ALISSON’S LIVERPOOL GOAL

ALLARDYCE PUTS DOWNER ON ALISSON’S LIVERPOOL GOAL

Sam Allardyce has reacted to Alisson’s last-minute winner for Liverpool tonight.

Liverpool beat Allardyce’s West Brom 2-1 at the Hawthorns to give their Champions League qualification hopes a massive boost.

And there was an unlikely hero as Alisson, the Reds goalkeeper, rose highest to head home in the dying seconds of the game.

The former Roma stopper was unmarked in the area and Allardyce has put a bit of a downer on the goal by highlighting that none of his players bothered to track the Brazilian.

He said: “Both the quality of the cross and the header were brilliant. If we had someone marking him it might have been better but it’s not to be. It’s bitterly disappointing.”

Allardyce is right in saying that he was unmarked but for the most part Liverpool won’t care – and nor should they.

This was a potentially massive goal in the context of their top-four hopes and marked or not, it was a stunning header from somebody who hasn’t got that much experience when it comes to heading the football, in comparison to outfield players.

Besides, there were sentimental understones in light of the fact that Alisson – who cut a very emotional figure at full-time – had lost his father in a tragedy earlier this year.

After the goal, the South American stopper, a £66 million signing in 2018, pointed to the sky in memory of his dad and later gave a tearful interview to Sky Sports cameras.

Liverpool have now moved one point Chelsea in fourth and three points adrift of Leicester City in third.

And with both of those sides facing off during the week, Champions League qualification is pretty much in the Reds’ hands.
