Where Liverpool owner John Henry ranks in the global rich list after £300m boost

Liverpool’s principal owner and FSG chief John Henry sees personal fortune grow

BLOOD RED: JURGEN KLOPP FEELING ‘LET DOWN’ BY LIVERPOOL OWNERS FSG?

John W. Henry’s personal fortune has grown by £300m in the past five years as his Fenway Sports Group empire has continued to grow.

Liverpool’s principal owner and FSG supremo Henry, 71, ranks at 1,133 according to the annual Forbes Rich List, published last week, which showed his wealth to stand at just over £2bn ($2.8bn), up over £300m from the £1.7bn ($2.4bn) that it was in 2016.

Henry’s wealth makes him the richest among FSG’s publicly disclosed partners, with three others featuring in the Forbes list of billionaires.

Henry, who began to make his fortune in the 1980s as a commodities trader before moving into sport in the late 1990s, makes the ‘Forbes 400’, sitting a 299 in the list of American’s wealthiest people.

Joining Henry on the list are FSG’s minority stakeholders, brothers Ted and Bill Alfond who are worth a combined £1.7bn ($2.4bn) through the family business, Dexter Shoe Company, that was started by their father in the 1950s. Their wealth puts them at 1,325 on the global list.

Also featuring is Seth Klarman at number 2,082 with a fortune of £1.08bn ($1.5bn).

An investor and hedge fund manager, Klarman serves as CEO of the Boston-based Baupost Group, a private investment partnership he founded back in 1982. He bought into FSG in 2009 when he purchased the Red Sox stake that was previously held by advertising mogul Ed Eskandarian.

Gerry Cardinale’s personal fortune does not make the list but his role in FSG as a partner is noted as being as a part of RedBird Capital Partners instead of as an individual, with the RedBird equity fund worth well into the billions.

Henry, who bought the Red Sox in 2002 before purchasing Liverpool in 2010 from Tom Hicks and George Gillett, has turned FSG into a business that is valued in excess of £5bn through its sporting ownership, that also includes the NASCAR team Roush Fenway Racing, as well as the NESN TV network and Fenway Sports Management strands of the business. Henry also privately owns the Boston Globe newspaper after acquiring it for $70m in 2013.

But how does his wealth stack up against other Premier League owners who feature on the Forbes list, which doesn’t include the estimated £15bn wealth of Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour.

After Mansour, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s £10.8bn fortune puts him in second in the Premier League and 131st globally, his wealth rising £104.8m in the past 12 months.

Aston Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris is third with a £6.2bn fortune that places him 287th globally, followed by Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke in third in fourth with £5.9bn and 304th globally.

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ principal owner Guo Guanchang, who owns the club through his Fosun International business, is worth £5.1bn, enough to make him the world’s 382n richest man, while Leicester City owners Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha and family in sixth in the Premier League worth an estimated £4.3bn, although they do not feature on the Forbes list.

In seventh is Crystal Palace joint-owner Josh Harris, whose £3.7bn wealth puts him at 563 in the world, up £43.4m from the same time last year.

Manchester United’s £3.6bn fortune under the Glazer family ownership comes next, followed by Tottenham Hotspur owner Joe Lewis, who owns he club through his ENIC Holdings company, who is ranked at number 586 on the Forbes list with a fortune of £3.5bn.

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri’s £2.1bn fortune sees him next – and 1,115 globally – through his steel and telecommunications investments in Metalloinvest and Megafon, respectively. His close friend and long-time business associate Alisher Usmanov, who has ties with Everton through a variety of active and highly lucrative sponsorship deals, is the 100th richest person in the world with a fortune worth £13.4bn

Liverpool’s principal owner Henry sits in 11th place in the Premier League list, ahead of Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley, with the Sports Direct founder worth an estimated £1.9bn to put him at 1,219 on the Forbes global list.
