This year’s edition of the Bayelsa City Marathon will hold this Saturday, February 10, 2024.
Initiator of the event tagged, ‘Senator Douye Diri (SDD) Marathon’, Igbeta Odonkumo who made this known in an interactive session with members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Bayelsa State Chapter at the NUJ Press Center in Yenagoa said it would feature the Elite and the Teen Categories.
According to him, the Teen Category will have about 50 Bayelsa State Secondary School Students and those who will be running for leisure racing in a 5 kilometer race from Otiotio junction in Yenagoa to end at the Peace Park Opposite Government House.
Odonkumo said fifty school bags would be handed to all participating 50 school athletes courtesy of the Gloria Diri Foundation.
He explained that the Elite Category which is 21 Kilometer will start from 7am at the Glory Drive, back of Akenfa junction in Yenagoa, terminating at the Peace Park, opposite Government House, stating that over 250 Marathoners across the country and abroad have registered to participate in the race that attracts five hundred thousand Naira each for the winner of the men and women’s events.
Odonkumo who is the Chairman of the Bayelsa Marathon Club hinted that Governor Douye Diri will lead a cast of government officials and dignitaries to grace the event.
He solicited the support of Sports Journalists in giving adequate publicity to the SDD Marathon.
In a response, Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria {SWAN}, Bayelsa State Chapter, Mr. Alambo Datonye praised the organizers of the Bayelsa City Marathon for initiating the event.
Mr. Alambo gave an assurance that Sports Writers would give their support to the organizers to promote and publicize the Marathon.
